Coaches Pub bar Rescue

Episode Recap

Coaches Pub, later renamed to Midtown Pub, was a Houston, Texas bar that was featured on Season 9 of Bar Rescue.

Though the Midtown Pub Bar Rescue episode aired in August 2024, the actual filming and visit from Bar Rescue took place before that in March 2024.

It was Season 9 Episode 22 and the episode name was “Midtown Slump”.

In this episode, Jon Taffer is thankfully back in action rescuing a bar in person, rather than delegating to one of his experts.

Jon is heading to Houston again, which has been the home for the past few episodes.

At the time of the episode airing, this episode marked Bar Rescue’s 19th visit to Texas, which makes it the fourth most popular state on the show.

Jon Taffer is in town to rescue Coaches Pub, a bar located in the Midtown neighborhood of Houston (a detail which will become more relevant when Jon renames the bar).

I’m writing this while I’m on vacation, so I’m going to keep the recap brief for now.

However, I might come back and add more information in the future once I’m back.

As part of the renovation, Jon Taffer decided to change the bar’s name from Coaches Pub to Midtown Pub.

While I have no issue with the name change, I think it can be a little confusing because there’s already another bar named Midtown Bar and Grill that exists.

When I was researching this update, it was easy to mix up the two bars, so I think that it could happen to customers as well.

If you have any thoughts on the name change, let me know in the comments section below.

So – was the Coaches Pub Bar Rescue episode a long-term success?

Keep reading my update to learn what happened next and if this Houston, TX bar is still open in 2025.

Midtown Pub Update - What Happened Next?

Now that we’ve recapped Jon’s visit to Coaches Pub, let’s talk about what happened to the bar after Jon and his crew left Houston, TX.

I’m on vacation right now so this post might not be as detailed as some of the others, but I will try to come back and update it with more information when I’m home.

I’ll start by discussing whether the bar is still open and using the concept from Bar Rescue.

Then, I’ll take a look at some of the reviews from after Taffer’s visit, along with any other information that I can dig up.

Let’s get started…

Is Midtown Pub still open after Bar Rescue?

As of my most recent check in 2024, Midtown Pub is still open and serving customers in Houston, TX.

More importantly, the bar seems to still be using the name and concept that Taffer gave it.

On most of its profiles, it’s listed as either “Midtown Pub” or “Midtown Pub (formerly Coaches Pub)”, which shows that they seem to be leaning into the new concept.

The bar seems to have lots of food and drink specials, along with staple events like karaoke.

There’s also an official Midtown Pub website that lists more information about the bar.

Here’s what the bar’s Houston location looks like in the most recent picture from Google Maps street view (which has already been updated to show the new Midtown Pub branding).

Midtown Pub reviews after Bar Rescue

Overall, Midtown Pub has a 3.5 star rating on 130+ Yelp reviews.

However, most of those reviews were written back when the bar was still Coaches Pub.

There are only a couple of recent reviews written after Taffer’s visit, with one being positive and the other complaining about the lack of wheelchair accessibility.

On Google, however, most of the recent reviews seem to be positive, which could be a good sign for the bar’s longevity.

Final thoughts on the episode

Overall, Midtown Pub seems to be keeping the name and concept from Taffer for now.

Hopefully, this will set them up for long-term success.

Recent reviews seem to generally be more positive than negative, so I hope they can continue.

As I mentioned, this post is not as detailed as my others because I’m on vacation, but I will try to make it more in depth once I’m back.

That wraps up my Midtown Pub Bar Rescue update.

  1. Jon had called this the “season finale” on IG, but I think that just means it’s a break until later. Most seasons have had multiple sets, one one recently filmed location noted that their episode would air in November.

It was published previously that season 9 will have at least 40 episodes, and we know there are more episodes in the can in greater Detroit/Toledo, greater St. Louis, and greater Milwaukee.

Kinda interesting that they did aired 4 greater Houston bars together.

I feel like BR is kinda limping to the finish line.

  2. Jon explained his absence to Us Magazine:

    https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/bar-rescues-jon-taffer-is-not-going-anywhere-after-missing-episodes/

He simply doesn’t want to spend 40 weeks a year on the road anymore and is developing “Team Taffer.”

He claimed that he has 3 more years planned with the network.

It appears to be a ploy to dilute out Bar Rescue over as many episodes as possible with Jon picking up a check for his executive producer role.

Jon, it’s a TV show. People tune in to watch you be dramatic. If you don’t want to do that anymore, either make fewer episodes or hang it up. The subs are terrible. You are devaluing your brand.

    • Thanks for sharing. That’s kind of what I had guessed given his absences. I guess I’m happy that the show won’t be cancelled after this season, but I still don’t really see a long-term future for it without Taffer. I guess it is cheap and helps Paramount fill up its schedule, so maybe they would keep it around for that reason even if the ratings drop without Taffer.
